Sara woke up early on Monday morning. Today was her first day of fifth grade. Her stomach felt strange and her hands were shaking a little. She was nervous.
"What if my new teacher is strict?" she thought. "What if I don't know anyone in my class?" Last year, her best friend Noa moved to a different city, and Sara felt lonely.
Sara put on her new blue shirt and packed her bag with notebooks, pencils, and a sandwich. Mom kissed her forehead at the door. "You will have a great day," Mom said with a warm smile.
When Sara arrived at school, the playground was full of kids. She walked slowly to her classroom. The teacher, Mr. Cohen, stood at the door. He had a friendly face and kind eyes.
"Welcome, Sara!" he said. "Please take any seat."
Sara looked around. She saw a girl with curly hair sitting alone near the window. The girl waved shyly. Sara took a deep breath and sat next to her.
"Hi, I'm Sara," she said.
"I'm Mia. I'm new at this school," the girl answered. "Do you want to be friends?"
Sara smiled wide. "Yes, please!"
The day was full of surprises. Mr. Cohen made jokes and the class laughed. Mia and Sara ate lunch together and played at recess.
When Sara came home, she ran to Mom. "Today was amazing!" she said. "I made a new friend."
